Zimbabwe hires former England player Gary Ballance as coach

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) grabbed headlines with the signing of ex-England batsman Gary Ballance as its new batting coach, a fresh start to the 35-year-old's chequered career. The appointment, which was announced by ZC on May 5, 2025, puts Ballance in a mentorship role for Zimbabwe's senior men's and junior sides, drawing on his international experience and personal connection with the country.

Gary Ballance

Gary Balance was born in Harare and later migrated to England at 16, working his way through the Yorkshire ranks between 2014 to 2017 to earn 23 Test caps and 14 ODIs for England. A rugged left-hander, he scored 1,498 Test runs for 37.45 on average, including four centuries. Yet, his career was halted due to the 2021 Yorkshire racism scandal in which he accepted using racist words against teammate Azeem Rafiq, for which later he apologized and called his past behavior unacceptable. Balance retired from international cricket in April 2023 after a brief return to Zimbabwe's domestic circuit.

ZC Director of Cricket Hamilton Masakadza pointed to Ballance's "deep understanding of our cricketing culture" as key to the appointment. "Gary's technical expertise and experience with Zimbabwean roots make him an ideal candidate,". The appointment comes as Zimbabwe seeks to rebuild after its failure to qualify for recent ICC tournaments, including the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Ballance appreciated, "Coaching in Zimbabwe is like returning to the nation that fostered my early enthusiasm for the sport." His relocation follows a consultancy assignment with county side Derbyshire in 2024, having worked on moulding youngsters there.

Though Ballance's skills are largely recognized, his move from player to coach will come under scrutiny. Zimbabwe batting has been inconsistent in the past, and his contribution will be important in solving technical issues, especially in Test cricket where the team has been struggling.

Andy Flower, ex-Zimbabwe captain and commentator, told Cricbuzz, "Gary has a wonderful cricketing brain, and his experience from English county cricket and international cricket will be a good addition. The biggest thing will be how he is able to share that with the players."

Ballance's journey from Headingley to Harare and back, is the metaphor of cricket's double identity and accountability. Though his appointment risks dividing, it also offers Zimbabwe the chance to learn from his battle-hardened lessons for future success.

For Ballance, this role is not just a career switch but a chance at redemption and a possibility that cricket, with its constant capacity to reinvent itself, is all too used to.

Zimbabwe Cricket hiring Gary Ballance as a batting coach is one brave move their rebuilding project takes, resting hope on his global profile and the fact that he is Zimbabwean. With all his checkered history, there is something here-technical capability and a familiarity with the game-Zimbabwe so desperately needs after its latest troubles. As his transition into a mentor is eagerly watched, the role provides him with room for redemption and Zimbabwe with the chance to utilize his expertise for the good of a better future. Ballance's guidance has the potential of transforming Zimbabwe's fortunes as well as his own cricketing reputation.
