On Monday, May 5, In a last-minute roster change, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have added Urvil Patel, a batsman and wicketkeeper from Gujarat, to the team to play the rest of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season in lieu of the injured Vansh Bedi. Following a workout earlier this week in which Bedi tore a ligament in his right knee, the team took preventive steps with the transfer.
During preseason training, the coaching team was pleased with Vansh Bedi, a talented wicketkeeper-batsman who was included in CSK's squad prior to the 2025 season. But during fielding practice, he attempted a diving grab and hurt his knee, which put an untimely end to his campaign. He was ruled out for the rest of the competition after scans revealed a Grade 2 ligament injury.
Dr. Arunate for Vansh. He showed great potential, but injuries are part of the sport. He will begin rehab immediately and we hope to see him back soon.”
Urvil Patel, 26, hails from Gujarat and has been a consistent performer in the domestic T20 circuit. Known for his aggressive hitting style and reliable glove work behind the stumps, Patel has played for Gujarat in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and has previously been a reserve for IPL teams like Gujarat Titans.
Despite not having yet made his IPL debut, Patel adds depth and vitality to CSK's squad.t. He amassed 312 runs in 10 games during the domestic 2024–25 season at a strike rate of 145. CSK has a flexible option going into the league's pivotal stage thanks to his ability to both open the innings and play the finisher's position.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan expressed confidence in Urvil's ability to adapt quickly to the team environment. "Urvil is someone we've tracked for a while. He's dynamic, hardworking, and hungry for an opportunity. We believe he can step in and contribute immediately if called upon."
The decision to bring in Urvil is also in line with CSK's long-standing tradition of backing Indian domestic talent. With Ruturaj Gaikwad leading the team and MS Dhoni now serving as a mentor, the team successfully combines youth and experience.
The balance of the team is intact.
The team management is certain that the overall balance will not be impacted, despite Bedi's injury being a setback. With Devon Conway and MS Dhoni no longer active behind the stumps, Urvil's arrival gives CSK a specialist wicketkeeper option, allowing flexibility in both batting order and field placements.
Everyone will be watching to see if Urvil Patel makes his eagerly anticipated IPL debut as CSK gets ready for their upcoming matchup against the Lucknow Super Giants. Patel sees it as his ideal opportunity to demonstrate his abilities on the largest T20 stage.
