Who Hit 6 Fours In An Over In IPL?

In a league known for massive sixes and stunning power-hitting, hitting six fours in one over may seem insignificant, but it is both rare and technically impressive. Only a few players in the IPL have hit the boundary with every ball in an over. Only two Indian batsmen hold this record: Ajinkya Rahane and Prithvi Shaw.

Ajinkya Rahane and Prithvi Shaw

Rahane's Magical Moment in 2012:

When Ajinkya Rahane, who was playing for the Rajasthan Royals (RR), faced the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Bengaluru during the 2012 IPL season, it was the first time this incredible feat was demonstrated. Rahane, who is renowned for his timing and graceful strokework, had a memorable inning that evening.

Rahane thrilled the crowd by striking six consecutive boundaries in the 14th over bowled by Sreenath Aravind. From square cuts to elegant flicks and powerful straight drives, each shot reflected his flawless timing and fearless intent. Rahane led RR to a resounding 59-run victory at the end of the innings with an incredible 103 not out off 60 balls.

This performance not only helped his team to win but also casted Rahane's name into IPL history as the first player ever to hit six fours in an over.

Prithvi Shaw Follows Suit Nine Years Later:

In 2021, Prithvi Shaw, another youthful Indian opener, repeated Rahane's accomplishment.  In the opening over of the chasing score, Shaw is representing Delhi Capitals (DC) in the game and shaw launched a fierce attack on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by bowler Shivam Mavi.

He was the one to hit six straight fours in the opening over of the innings with sheer confidence. Shaw demonstrated superb timing and unwavering intent in everything from straight drives to flicks past midwicket.

By the time the over ended, Mavi looked shaken, and Shaw had already set the tone for the chase. His rapid 82 off 41 balls ensured a smooth seven-wicket win for Delhi Capitals in Ahmedabad.

This made Shaw not only the second player to achieve this feat but also the first batter in T20 history (as per ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball data) to hit six fours in the first over of a match.

While six sixes frequently make headlines; hitting six fours requires finesse, footwork, and great timing. Both Rahane and Shaw demonstrated that borders are more than just physical power; they require expertise, location, and composure.

This record is unique and difficult to set that's why it has only been matched twice in the IPL's 17 seasons.

Ajinkya Rahane and Prithvi Shaw despite of coming from opposite generations, share a unique piece of IPL history. Their accomplishments highlight the beauty of traditional strokeplay in a game dominated by power hitters. In a society preoccupied with sixes, these two Indian stars demonstrated that timing can be just as deadly as strength—one four at a time.
