Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami discusses retirement plans, says he'll quit only when the passion fades

With Ashwin, Pujara, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma easing out of different formats in recent years, speculation has now turned toward India's seasoned fast bowler Mohammed Shami. Yet Shami, known for his blunt honesty and a touch of humor, has brushed aside the retirement talk without hesitation.

When asked about his future retirement plans, Shami responded with a counter-question: "Whose life will become better if I retire? Who truly views me as a hindrance?" His remarks pierced through the speculation much like one of his precise deliveries. He further added, "The day I get bored, I will leave." In other words, as long as he continues to love the game and enjoy his time on the field, retirement is not on his mind.

This was not the first time Shami directly addressed retirement rumors. Back in May, speculation spread on social media suggesting he might follow Kohli and Rohit by stepping away from Test cricket. Shami quickly took to Instagram to shut down the reports, calling it "the worst story of the day" and urging the media to share more positive news. His uncompromising stance once again reflected his confidence and resilience as a seasoned campaigner.

Although age is beginning to catch up with him, Shami has made it clear that his outlook on the future remains sharp. He revealed that his "last remaining dream" is to help India win the ODI World Cup and bring the trophy home once more. He also stressed that even if he is not selected for international fixtures in the future, he is ready to continue playing domestic cricket to maintain his rhythm and form. Clearly, retirement is not on the horizon, and at least until the 2027 World Cup, Shami remains a key asset for Indian cricket.

Shami's words went beyond simply shutting down speculation; they offered a glimpse into his outlook on both cricket and life. While the debate over whether it's time for him to step aside continues, his response left little room for doubt - the call will be his alone. For Shami, the end will come only when the fire to compete burns out, not when the headlines try to write his farewell.

This mix of composure and determination offers valuable inspiration to other athletes as well. Whether in sports or in life, the true moment to step away should be decided by oneself, never imposed by others.
