Musheer Khan debuts in IPL, faces criticism from Kohli but earns bat gift post-match

When Punjab Kings (PBKS) used Musheer Khan as an Impact Replacement against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2025 Qualifier 1, it was a shocking turn of events. Making his debut in a high-pressure situation, Musheer walked in at 60/6, a moment that soon became a talking point-not just for his performance, but for what unfolded at the crease.

Musheer Khan debuts in IPL, faces criticism from Kohli

As Musheer took guard, RCB star Virat Kohli—known for his intensity—was seen gesturing and asking "Who is this guy?" while standing at first slip. The moment, caught on camera, had commentators Matthew Hayden and Harsha Bhogle chuckling. Hayden noted Kohli was "just letting him know he's a debutant," while Bhogle joked that Musheer should've reminded Kohli about his brother, Sarfaraz Khan, who has played Test cricket for India.

Unfortunately, Musheer's debut was brief. He was dismissed for a three-ball duck by Suyash Sharma. Despite the shaky start, he later took a wicket—an encouraging sign for his future. Yet, the spotlight remained on his interaction with Kohli rather than his stats.

From the beginning, RCB controlled the game. With outstanding bowling from Suyash Sharma (3/17), Josh Hazlewood (3/21), and Yash Dayal (2/26), PBKS was bowled out for just 101 in 14.1 overs. The target was easily chased by RCB in response, scoring 106/2 in just 10 overs. Leading the attack with a blistering 56 off 27 balls was Philip Salt.

Despite Rajat Patidar serving as the formal captain, Kohli's impact was clear and remain in the team. Fans were reminded of his captaincy days by his aggressive leadership, field settings, and outspoken enthusiasm. But his casual remark, which was reported to have referred to Musheer as a "water-boy," instantly provoked anger. Some supporters felt it went too far because it targeted a young debutant who was making his first appearance.

After the game, Kohli shocked everyone by giving Musheer Khan one of his bats. This could have been a subliminal message that despite the earlier tension, there were no hard feelings. The gesture was appreciated by fans and helped calm some of the backlash.

With the win, RCB has reached the IPL final for the fourth time. Kohli, now the fifth-highest run-scorer of the season with 617 runs, continues to be a key figure. As fans chant "Ee Sala Cup Namde" once more, all eyes are on whether RCB can finally end their title drought.
