The updated IPL 2025 schedule has been formally issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), following a brief but historic pause brought on by the growing geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will play Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Bengaluru on May 17 , which will end on June 3 with the final. There are still 17 games left, comprising four playoff games and 13 league games.
The revised schedule comes after extensive consultations with government and security agencies after the temporary suspension of the tournament on May 8, when the match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) in Dharamsala was halted mid-innings due to a regional security scare. BCCI decided to pause the competition in the interest of safety.
The updated fixtures include two double-header Sundays on May 18 and May 25. The abandoned May 8 clash between PBKS and DC will be replayed on May 24 in Jaipur, which will serve as the temporary home base for PBKS following the withdrawal of Dharamsala as a venue. This change has affected not just PBKS but also CSK and SRH, who will no longer get to play any matches at their original home grounds.
In total, matches will now be played across six cities: Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad.
The BCCI confirmed the following:
May 17: RCB vs KKR, Bengaluru
May 18: RR vs PBKS (3:30 PM), DC vs GT (7:30 PM)
May 24: PBKS vs DC, Jaipur
May 25: GT vs CSK (3:30 PM), SRH vs KKR (7:30 PM)
May 27: Final league game - LSG vs RCB, Lucknow
Playoffs:
Qualifier 1: May 29
Eliminator: May 30
Qualifier 2: June 1
Final: June 3
(Venues for playoffs to be announced)
The resumption kicks off with RCB vs KKR on May 17. On the first double-header Sunday (May 18), RR face PBKS in Jaipur at 3:30 PM, followed by DC vs GT in Delhi at 7:30 PM. The second double-header (May 25) features GT vs CSK (Ahmedabad) in the afternoon and SRH vs KKR (Delhi) in the evening. The last league game will be between LSG and RCB on May 27 in Lucknow.
The extended IPL window now overlaps with the England vs West Indies ODI series beginning May 29. This overlap could cause issues for franchises whose overseas players have been called up. Romario Shepherd (RCB), Shamar Joseph (LSG), and Sherfane Rutherford (GT) are confirmed selections in the West Indies squad, while Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, Phil Salt, and Reece Topley could also be affected if England announces a full-strength squad.
To address this, the BCCI has permitted franchises to sign temporary overseas replacements for unavailable players.
Now that the revised schedule is in place and safety measures have been implemented, fans can expect a packed final leg of the tournament as teams vie for playoff spots. Pressure will be on PBKS, who ended third with 15 points from 11 games before the suspension, especially without home support.
As IPL 2025 returns, all eyes will be on how teams handle the logistical and emotional challenges of this historic season.
